Does luxury vinyl need an underlayment?

Does luxury vinyl need an underlayment?

The answer to that question depends on your type of subfloor. Luxury vinyl flooring is pretty easy to install, especially when it's a floating floor that clicks, mat, and hovers; sometimes, it won't require an underlayment, such as if you're installing over another resilient flooring like vinyl.

Other times, such as with a hard surface like hardwood or concrete, you most likely will want some extra cushioning. In addition, concrete can be damp, so you'll probably want a moisture barrier.

By the way, you won't need one if an underlayment is already attached; however, depending on your situation, you may want a vapor barrier. The best thing is to talk to our flooring experts, who will advise you on whether or not you need one and the best kind for your home if you do. The type of underlayment you require will depend on the subfloor, whether it's concrete, plywood, or if you're installing over an existing floor.

What is the purpose of an underlayment?

Subfloors are often plywood but sometimes concrete. The underlayment will be sandwiched between the subfloor and surface; it provides cushioning for noise insulation and comfort and can sometimes act as a moisture barrier.

Luxury vinyl: affordable, stylish, waterproof, and durable

This would be one of the best investments you make in your home. Images of wood, stone, and tile are taken with high-definition photography, so they're clear and vibrant. Micro beveling and embossing add depth, dimension, and textured looks, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed.

A great design option that adds to the realism is that it can be cut into long planks called Luxury Vinyl Plank or LVP; or square, tile-sized pieces called Luxury Vinyl Tile or LVT.

Five times thicker than the original vinyl, this has a transparent, strong melamine wear layer that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs. In addition, it's waterproof from bottom to top, meaning it can be submerged or spilled on without consequence.

This vinyl is easy-care, needing only a regular sweeping and periodic mopping and installation, as you already know, is uncomplicated.
